Many of the weavers are familiar with the different myths and tales of their region. The pictures of these tales and myths also form pictorial carpets. Some pictorial carpets such as the "Lion carpet" were used to cover the floors of tents of tribes and some were even hung in the homes of tribal chiefs. The taste in selecting the right pictures for the right designs is what adds value to these pictorial carpets. It is important for weavers to take note of the type of pictures they choose (religion, places, events, animals etc) and to ensure they blend with the overall design of the carpet, depicting a whole carpet. These weavers are also skillful in embedding the pictures on the carpets by carefully measuring the margins and taking note of other motifs.

One of the most common comments about pictorial carpets is that, they have remained in such good condition for centuries. Pictorial carpets are made of high quality materials. However the main reason why they last long is because most of these carpets are rarely ever walked on. Most of them are either hung on walls or kept in areas where no one walks on them. As such, there is hardly any wear and tear on these pieces.

Tabriz, Isfahan and Qum are three areas that produce the vast majority of pictorial carpets in Iran. Most pictorial carpets are often made of silk and wool or just pure silk and these areas facilitate the production of such carpets with the readily available materials.
